Opening weekend preview

Posted on Friday, September 1st, 2017

The North Caley season gets underway tomorrow with three MacLeod & MacCallum League games, along with a Scottish Cup prelim tie, as Golspie Sutherland make the long trip south to Ayrshire, where they take on Scottish Junior Cup winners Glenafton Athletic. Probably about as difficult a tie they could have got, not just in travel distance, but opposition also. We all wish Golspie well for this game.

An early noon kick off at the Links, Tain, will see St.Duthus take on Inverness Athletic. Both sides have had a busy pre season with numerous friendly games under their belts, so they should both be well prepared and looking to get the season off with a win. The other two games will take place later in the day with 2.30pm KO's as Thurso travel south to take on Alness United and Halkirk United host Orkney.

The Orkney lads will be looking to go one better than last season where they ended up a close second to league winners Invergordon. The league defeat at Halkirk last season was probably the game that put paid to Orkneys title challenge, so a opening days win at Halkirk would be an ideal start for the island team. Halkirk United will start the season as a bit of an unknown quantity as they have a new management team in place and a new look playing squad, but despite the changes Halkirk will be a tough team to beat at Morrison Park.

The outcome of the Alness versus Thurso is a tough one to call as despite Alness United finishing bottom last season, they were a side that was very much capable of beating any team on their day when they had all their players available. If they are missing any of their main players then the Thurso side might prove to be too strong and get their league campaign of to a winning start. Thurso will see this game as one they very much will need to win if they want to improve on last seasons mid table finish.

Last seasons champions Invergordon will have to wait until next week to get their title defence underway, as their scheduled match had to be called off due to opponents Bunillidh Thistle being unable to field a team due to the majority of their squad being unavailable for selection.

Good luck to all teams and with the weather looking good why not get along to a game.
